Inception Movie Review – No Spoilers

Written By: Gareth WrightJul 20, 2010

Sadly it’s not often I feel the urge to post about a movie.

In this case I find it hard not to. There is a good reason this film is seeing a lot of buzz in social media circle.

Director Christopher Nolan made his name with the unforgettable Memento (no pun intended) though he’s more recently known for the transformation of the Batman franchise from ponce and poppycock of the original films to the Dark Knight.

Thankfully however, Inception sees Nolan return to what he does best. A film with a solid concept, rich script and superb execution.

The special effects in this film are made more incredible by the fact that they enhance the experience without distracting you from the detailed script.

Too many films of late have sought to smack you in the face with the technical ingenuity of their CGI and green screen effects. Nolan where possible, preferred live action stunts instead.

The corridor fight scene for example was filmed in an aircraft used to simulate zero-g environments for astronauts.

Fitted out and decorated like a hotel corridor the actors were able to move in ways made otherwise impossible without wires or CGI. It’s hard to describe the difference this makes without using an analogy too close to the films core concepts to be comfortable…but….

In most films where such action sequences take place and the actor is replaced or wirework extracted something in your mind just knows its fake.

The actors don’t quite move naturally etc.

Given that the majority of this film is set in a dream state one might think they could get away with this, which makes it all the more satisfying that such effort was taken.

A good thing as such a cognitive script doesn’t need the mind distracted with awkward wirework.

A must see recommendation from me. :)

Bootnote: (Good to see the kid from First Rock From the Sun – Must be quite an athlete to do those corridor scenes)
